Cultural Diversity as a Resource in North Karelia -project ends on 31.12.2004 and for this reason the doors of the International Meeting Place Aurora has been closed.

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

"CULTURAL DIVERSITY AS A RESOURCE IN NORTH KARELIA" PROJECT

The project "Cultural diversity as a resource in North Karelia" has as its' main objective to support comprehensive integration of immigrants and other foreigners into the Finnish society and to help them to feel at home in Finland. The project also aims at improving employment of immigrants as well as at increasing tolerance and interaction among immigrants and the local people.


Central project actions:

  • counselling in immigration issues in the premises of the international meeting place Aurora in Joensuu
  • study circle activities for immigrants in Ilomantsi, Liperi, Outokumpu and Tohmajärvi
  • training activities (language, computer courses, career planning, vocational training, seminars)
  • club and hobby activities
  • production of clear and understandable network education material
  • drawing up of language tests and supporting education material

Adult Education Centre of North Karelia governs the "Cultural diversity as a resource in Norgh Karelia" project. The project's main financing parties are the European Social Fund and the Employment and Economic Development Centre of North Karelia. The project is planned to be finished at the end of the year 2004.

International meeting place Aurora

Aurora is a common "living room" for both the local people and immigrants in Joensuu. There visitors can for example have a cup of coffee at the cafe. Aurora offers also free Internet connections as well as plenty of room for leisure time, for example for reading newspapers and magazines from different countries. Aurora also organises various courses and hobby activities.

Knowledge and skills from study circles

Study circle activities aim at integrating immigrants into their new home town and country. In study circles the participants can for example study Finnish, culture and information technology. In addition, study circle activities also comprise practical training and voluntary, organisation and hobby activities.

Counselling in immigrant issues

Two immigration counsellors work in Aurora. They support and help immigrants in different situations in life and mitigate prejudices. The immigration counsellors can be reached by phone or by appointment.
