STUDY
CIRCLE ACTIVITIES FOR IMMIGRANTS (OPRI)
The
project "Cultural diversity as a resource in North Karelia"
offers study circle activities for immigrants in four municipalities
surrounding Joensuu: Ilomantsi, Liperi, Outokumpu
and Tohmajärvi.
Study
circles are a new studying mode, which take into account the
needs of dispersed settlement areas and their opportunities
to integrate immigrants to the area concerned. The study circle
activities develop cooperation with different parties, train
local people to group leaders as well as organise study circles
for immigrants.
The
study circle activities aim at utilising all opportunities
offered by the municipalities to organise activities for immigrants
to support their integration to the Finnish society and their
new home region. The cooperation network comprises e.g. different
organisations and associations operating in the municipalities,
the business life as well as authorities. All local people
interested in cultural diversity are invited to join the immigrant
work.
The
most important target group in the study circle activities
consists of immigrants living in the municipalities concerned.
The group leaders in the study circles, normally 3-6 persons
/ municipality, are local people who have been trained for
that purpose.
Study circles for immigrants
The
actual study circle activities for immigrants started in February
2002. In the study circles the immigrants study for example
information technology, Finnish language and cultural and
social issues. Each study circle has 8 hours of teaching by
group leaders. In addition, the study circles cooperate with
organisations, associations, different schools and training
institutions, companies and other parties interested in immigrant
work. The objective is to get immigrants actively involved
also in other activities in the municipality concerned. The
immigrants are offered opportunities to have practical training,
to participate in voluntary work, association and organisation
work, hobby activities etc.
Both
the group leaders and immigrants will get learning environments
in the network during the project. Pages offering information
about the Finnish society are already available in the address
http://virtuoosi.pkky.fi/vilma. In addition, interactive Finnish
language pages as well as pages providing information about
cultural issues will be produced for immigrants. If you are
interested in the study circle activities and want to join
